Drywall Finishing Tools
Choose a drywall mud pan, hawk or bucket scoop
Compare how the tool holds compound and how it fits the knife you plan to use.
Start with the way you load your knife
A pan gives you sides to hold compound and a rim you can use as directed to remove excess. A hawk has a flat board that you hold under the work. Compare the work area and how the load will sit in your hand.
Compare the usable pan opening
Measure the flat edge of your widest knife and check the actual inside length of the pan. A stated overall length can include ends or a rim, and tapered walls can leave less room at the bottom.
Use a scoop for transfer
A scoop transfers compound from a bucket into a pan or onto a hawk. Match the shape to the container and check the seller's listed tool width. Consider how often you need to refill before choosing pan capacity.
